In high school, I rarely read any other book, except the Bible. I did not like reading and I saw it as a waste of time. Yet, I became convinced of the importance of reading because of what can be learned through it. Now, I love reading and I push myself to make time to do it. Reading good books should never take the place of reading the Bible, but it is one of the ways that we grow in Godliness. Even if you don’t like to read, I want to challenge you to discipline yourself to read. You will be glad that you did! Here are some books that I recommend.
The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus by John R. Cross
Everyone should read this book, as it provides an important overview of the Bible. It shows how through the pages of Scripture God was preparing the way for the Deliverer, Jesus Christ.
Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God by J. I Packer
Very helpful in thinking through the theology behind evangelism, showing us what is and what is not our responsibility. A solid grasp of the sovereignty of God actually aids and motivates us in our evangelism.
What is a Healthy Church Member? by Thabiti M. Anyabwile
Church membership is an important step in committing to a local church. This book challenges church members to continue to grow as a member, sharing what they should seek to be.
Lit by Tony Reinke
A book on reading books. If you are unsure about the importance of reading, this book will challenge your thinking by showing you why you should read and provide for you a Biblical framework for reading books.
Loving the Way Jesus Loves by Phil Ryken
Ryken takes the characteristics of love from 1 Corinthians 13 and then shows his readers how Jesus loved in that way.
Resolving Everyday Conflict by Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson
We all face conflict, whether small or big. Sande points us to the gospel to provide hope, help, and resolution for that conflict.
When Sinners Say I Do by Dave Harvey
A must read for all couples. We often forget that in every marriage there are two sinners who will sin against each other. This book acknowledges this reality but within the context of the hope that the gospel provides to change people.
The Resolution for Men by Stephen and Alex Kindrick with Randy Alcorn
Dads need to take seriously their responsibility to be the men and fathers that God wants them to be. This book challenges them with a resolution, helping them see what a Dad needs to do to honor God.
